Why would I replace a tiled roof with metal?

As tiled roofs age, cracked tiles, deteriorating pointing and ongoing repairs can become more common. For some homeowners, this is a good opportunity to consider replacing the existing roof with COLORBOND® steel.

A tile-to-metal conversion can provide:

A complete tile-to-metal conversion

Changing from tiles to metal involves more than replacing one roofing material with another. The two roofing systems have different requirements, so the structure underneath needs to be properly assessed and prepared for the new roof.

We manage the conversion from start to finish, including removing and disposing of your existing tiles, inspecting the roof structure and completing any necessary preparation. New battens and insulation are installed before your new COLORBOND® steel roofing, flashings and cappings go on.

This ensures each part of the roof is properly prepared for the change from tile to metal.

Why we use COLORBOND® steel

We work exclusively with COLORBOND® steel for our metal roof replacements. It’s a material we know and trust, and one that is well suited to Australian homes and conditions.

COLORBOND® steel is designed and tested to perform in Australia’s sun, wind and changing weather. Many colours also use solar-reflective technology to help manage heat from the sun.

It’s lighter weight places less load on the roof structure while still providing a strong roofing system.

It’s steel construction and protective coatings help it withstand exposure to the elements over time.

Once installed, COLORBOND® steel requires relatively little ongoing maintenance.

FAQs

Metal roofing can have a higher upfront cost than some tile options, but there are other factors to consider over the life of the roof. COLORBOND® steel requires relatively little ongoing maintenance and removes the need for common tile repairs such as replacing cracked tiles, re-bedding and re-pointing.

The overall cost will depend on your roof size, design and the work required to convert the existing tiled roof to metal.

In most cases, yes. You can usually remain in your home while your metal roof is being replaced, although there will be noise and activity throughout the day. We’ll let you know beforehand if there’s anything you need to be aware of during the work.

Once the existing roofing is removed, we can properly assess the battens and underlying roof structure. If we uncover damage that needs to be repaired before the new roof can be installed, we’ll discuss this with you before carrying out additional work.

Yes. Metal roofing is significantly lighter than concrete or terracotta tiles, which reduces the overall load placed on your home’s roof structure. Replacing it can mean less ongoing stress on the framing and supporting components, particularly in older homes.

If asbestos-containing materials are identified, they need to be safely removed by appropriately licensed professionals before roofing work can continue. We’ll explain what’s required and how this may affect the project before proceeding.

COLORBOND® steel is covered by manufacturer warranties, with the applicable warranty depending on the product, application and location. Our roofing installation is also covered by a workmanship warranty, with the relevant warranty information provided for your project.
